Know Your Rights: become a content creator with Youthlaw

Youthlaw is looking for young Victorians aged 18–25 to help create a series of short videos about legal rights, made by young people, for young people.

We’ll pay you to co-design and produce 20 short videos for TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts, covering the everyday legal issues young people actually run into, police powers, fines, online safety, phone contracts and buy-now-pay-later, and how to get free legal help. No legal or video experience required. We’ll bring the legal knowledge. We want your voice, your ideas and your platform know-how.

About the project

Youthlaw is Victoria’s specialist community legal centre for young people under 25. We provide legal help, social work support, and education so young people can understand and assert their rights.

Too much legal information is written for lawyers, not for the people who actually need it. This project flips that. Instead of Youthlaw telling young people what the law says, we’re partnering with young content creators to shape how that information gets made and shared, in formats young people already use and trust.

What’s involved

Up until June 2027, you’ll take part in:

• 8 co-design workshops
• Content production labs
• Reflection labs

Sessions can be face-to-face or online, so young people from all across Victoria are encouraged to express their interest.

Who we’re looking for

• Aged 18 to 25
• Living in Victoria, anywhere across the state
• Curious about legal rights and keen to help other young people understand them
• Comfortable creating content for TikTok, Instagram or YouTube, whether that’s through formal experience or just posting for fun

We want the Collective to reflect the diversity of young Victorians, so we especially encourage applications from young people across different ages, genders, cultural backgrounds, regional and rural communities, and from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, LGBTQIA+ and disability communities, as well as those with experience of legal issues.

You don’t need to already know the law. You don’t need a production background. We’re looking for people who understand what makes young people stop scrolling, and who want to use that for something that matters.

Pay

This is a paid opportunity. You’ll be paid for your time, including workshops, labs, preparation and check-ins.

Your rights as a participant

You’re in control of your involvement. You can skip topics you’re not comfortable with, take a break, or leave a session at any time. We’ll check in with you before and after each session, and support is available throughout, including if you want to step back from the project altogether. You’ll be asked to provide informed consent before you start, and you can withdraw that consent at any time.
